Flippant
Pigma ink on paper, 4″ H x 3.25″ W
Flippant was inspired by a teacher’s misunderstanding of my learning disability. I have a significant visual processing disorder that challenges my ability to read. One teacher told me I was failing biology on purpose. I replied, “Yes, that’s exactly what I’m doing. I am intentionally failing because that serves me so well.” She told me not to be flippant with her. This piece illustrates the many things that ran through my mind as I processed how ignorant she was while at the same time I was comfortable with my truth and who I really am. It is part of a portrait series that challenges stereotypes and social norms, explores emotions, and provokes viewers to explore their reactions to the work.
